conventions! – D23 & SDCC 2017

D23 and Comic Con were back to back weekends. Why would I subject myself to such a strenuous schedule? I wouldn’t have it any other way, feeding the inner nerd two weekends in a row was definitely tasking on the body but it was so much fun.

moana – the ocean is calling you to see this movie

Moana is the 56th Disney animated feature film. It’s directed by the fantastic Ron Clements and John Musker, and co-directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams.  It’s got a screenplay by Jared Bush, with story by; Ron Clements, John Musker, Chris Williams, Don Hall, Pamela Ribon, Aaron Kandell, and Joran Kandell. The music is written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina. It features the voices of Auli’i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger and Alan Tudyk. The film is about Moana, the daughter of a chief who is chosen by the ocean to reunite a magic stone to the goddess it was stolen from, she and Maui work to save her people. Continue reading

pete’s dragon (2016) – more than a remake/update

Pete’s Dragon is the 2016 version of the original premise from the 1977 film. This version is directed by David Lowery with a screenplay from Lowery and Toby Halbrooks. It stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence and Robert Redford. It’s about a kid who survives a car crash, who’s then orphaned, and then meets a dragon in upper north west. Flash forward to six years later and how does the “modern” world deal with this unlikely pair. Continue reading

zootopia – lions and tigers and bears… and all the rest

Zootopia is the latest 3D computer-animated movie from Walt Disney Pictures, and the 55th animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. This film is a mixture of things, let’s see if I can sum it up… it’s an underdog story, neo-noir, buddy-comedy, adventure film, that follows the unlikely partnership between a rabbit police officer and a sly hustler of a fox, together they unearth a conspiracy involving missing citizens of the predatory descent. It’s directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore, and co-directed by Jared Bush. It has a screenplay by Jared Bush and Phil Johnston. The film features the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, J.K. Simmons, Tommy Chong, Octavia Spencer, Jenny Slate, Shakira, and Maurice LaMarche. Continue reading

star wars: the force awakens – star wars! nuthin’ but staar waars!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is finally out. This is truly the most anticipated movie of the year. Now that the world has been given ample time to watch this film, here, we, go!
The Force Awakens takes place about thirty years after Luke became a Jedi and the second Death Star was destroyed. Now he’s disappeared and the First Order (what became of the Galactic Empire) and the Resistance (backed by the Republic and led by General Leia) search the galaxy to find him.

The film is directed by J.J. Abrams, it stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Max von Sydow. It’s written by Lawrence Kasdan & J.J. Abrams and Michael Arndt.

the good dinosaur – a very good movie

The Good Dinosaur is the latest Pixar film. It’s about an alternate timeline where the dinosaurs lived and a meteor didn’t wipe them out. The film follows an Apatosaurus named Arlo as he finds his way, not only with his family, but with his world.
The film stars Raymond Ochoa, Jack Bright, Sam Elliott, Anna Paquin, A.J. Buckley, Jeffrey Wright, Frances McDormand and Steve Zahn. It was directed by Peter Sohn in 2014, previous to that Bob Peterson was the director.
This is the first time that, along with Inside Out, Pixar has released two feature films in the same year. Continue reading

ant-man – you’ll believe a man can shrink

Ant-Man is the latest installment into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s about Scott Lang as he becomes the new Ant-Man, but his troubled past catches up with him when he plots a heist with an older inventor bent on saving the world from certain destruction, so this time his criminal skills are put to good use.
This film is directed by Peyton Reed with a screenplay from Edgar Wright & Joe Cornish and Adam McKay & Paul Rudd. The film stars Rudd (as Scott Lang), Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Pena, Tip Harris, Anthony Mackie, Wood Harris, Judy Greer, David Dastmalchian, and Michael Douglas. cinderella – this one fits… and can stay.

We all know the story of Cinderella, or at least we should, a girl has a cruel step family, she wants to go to a royal ball, a fairy god-mother makes it possible, a glass slipper is lost and the prince has to find the maiden who fits the shoe. Here we get an update version of the Charles Parrault classic fairy tale, it’s directed by Kenneth Branagh and stars; Lily James, Cate Blanchett, Richard Madden, Stellan Skarsgard, Nonso Anozie and Helena Bonham Carter.
