How To Train Your Dragon 2 is the direct sequel to How To Train Your Dragon. The events in this film take place five years after the previous film so Hiccup is now a young adult, throw in some less than tolerant Dragon Hunter and Hiccup’s estranged mother, and you have this sequel. Sound simple enough?
The good; you have the original cast returning; Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller and Kristen Wiig.
The themes are similar to the first film, but they’re done in a different light, which makes things interesting. I was impressed at how the themes were now placed on an outside force, rather than the hometown.
The flying scenes are just as superb as the original film.
The bad; it doesn’t have the same punch as the first film. The stakes seem greater with the villain of the story being an outside force, but it just doesn’t deliver. There’s a climax before we hit the third act where our heroes are at our lowest, there’s a death of a main character and they’re left stranded… maybe it was the theatre where I saw it, but the impact of those sequences just left me desiring more. The speakers probably weren’t up to snuff, which sort of took away from the emotional punch.
Overall, one of the better sequels. For anyone who’s a fan of the first film I would recommend this one. Having never read the source material I’m still invested to see where the next movie will take us. And bravo for allowing a main character to die and have some meaning.
