Finally got around to seeing American Hustle. It’s mostly based on a true story about the FBI, some politicians, con-men and the seventies. It’s got a great cast, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner, and a bunch of appearances.
The good; the acting is superb. Everyone steals the show when they’re on camera. There’s a delicate balance between over the top and hyper realized, American Hustle manages to create a world where these characters of characters are logical and consistent. The hair wasn’t over the top and I really appreciated it for that, and the wardrobe was excellent.
David O. Russell knows how to direct actors, previously he’s given us Oscar worth films such as The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook. He manages to pull it off again, assembling this ensemble cast but allowing them to each shine in their own right.
The bad; I didn’t really care about the plot, the plot in this film is almost the red herring of Hitchcock movies. You need the plot to get the characters to come together, but after that it gets convoluted and very drama heavy. At the core it’s more about seeing these actors interact with eachother, in a sense it’s really about actors… acting.
And because of that, the ending was a bit predictable, but not unenjoyable, I just have to put something here.
Overall I enjoyed watching these actors… well act with eachother. Go see this movie for the actors, the plot is so so. But I had thoroughly enjoyed it.
