sky crawlers

Watched The Sky Crawlers.  The film is directed by Mamoru Oshii, and if you’re unfamiliar with his body of work, he’s done the two Ghost in the Shell movies.  And Sky Crawlers very much has his stamp on it.  Technically the visuals are amazing, at times this traditionally ,two dimensional, animated movie looks very real.  The dog fights are especially well done.  The movie opens with an action packed dog fight with aircraft that is very different from our own, but yet familiar.  Then the pace is slowed down considerably and we’re in a world that isn’t our own, it’s great.  It’s one thing that anime does very well, it allows us to be immersed in a world that is unlike our own but yet similar.  The character designs are much more current and less detailed, unlike Oshii’s other movies, at first this threw me off, but seeing the dog fights, perhaps that’s where they cut the budget to keep the fights looking so incredible.  Under all the eye candy and the action lies a message about purpose.  Like his other movies there’s a philosophical question underneath it all.  Awesome stuff, and then the twist at the end is great as well.  The movie is also littered with references to his other movies.  This definitely isn’t a movie for everyone, but if you like it, we can be friends
